3 simple steps to test your safety switches
When was the last time you tested your safety switches?
Safety switches monitor the flow of electricity through a circuit and turn off the power in a fraction of a second if a leakage of current is detected. They provide personal protection against electric shock.
If your safety switches are not working properly, it may pose a risk to you and your family.
It is recommended that you test your safety switches every 3 months.
Follow our simple steps to test yours today.
1. If there is anyone in the house, let them know you are about to test your safety switches; the testing process will cut power to the circuits connected to the safety switch.
2. Open up your switchboard, and locate your test button on your safety switches (this should be labelled with either T' or 'Test' – if you’re not sure or are having trouble locating it, feel free to give us a call to talk you through it). If it flicks off and cuts the power, it is working. Check to see which lights or appliances are now off; these are protected by this safety switch. If it has not cut the power to the connected circuit then you are no longer protected. Call us asap to come and take a look – 0448 219 007
3. After testing, be sure to turn the safety switch back on. Depending on the safety switch type, push it back upwards or twist it into the 'on' position. For circuits with a refrigerator or air conditioner, wait for two to three minutes before resetting to avoid possible appliance damage.
Your safety switch will only protect you and your family if it’s working properly.
