Kids and electricity don't mix

Harry the Handyman is on the move!

Houses in general are built for adults, not children. Kids can easily get themselves into strife with electrical hazards around the house that you may not even know are there.

If you have, or are expecting, children we suggest you get down on all fours and view the house from their perspective. While you're down there go through the below checklist to ensure the electrical safety of your house.

- Is there an electrical safety switch to prevent electric shock? See our earlier blog on safety switches which includes 3 simple steps to test your safety switches today.

- Are all electrical appliances, plugs and cords in good condition? We recommend replacing any appliances that may pose a hazard and ensure small appliances such as hairdryers and irons are stored out of reach when not in use.

- Are safety plugs fitted in unused power points including power boards? You can purchase safety plugs from most baby stores or hardwares stores.

- Is the hot water delivery temperature for your home at a maximum of 50 degrees Celsius? As per Kidsafe QLD, it is recommended you lower the maximum temperature to 50 degrees to avoid burns.

- Are all smoke alarms in working order? You can check this by pressing the test button on the smoke alarm.

- Are all cords out of reach from a crawling or standing child? This can be done by either hiding the cords behind the appliance or by having additional power points installed to avoid running cords.

- In the kitchen, do the electrical appliances have short cords that do not hang over the bench? Ensure cords are out of reach and appliances are well set back on counters.

- Do you need to repair/replace your oven door? The glass used on oven doors is a special heat resistant toughened or tempered glass. If damaged or cracked it can affect the heat resistance and cause burns when touched.

- Is your TV screen and any associated speakers, cords, power boards etc secure? TV screens instinctively attract children and can easily topple over on top of them if not secured safely.
