5 tips to reduce your heating bill this winter
The average cost to run your reverse cycle air conditioner for heating purposes is about $0.33 - $0.40 per hour; cheaper than gas heating ($0.47 - $0.52 p/h) and even most of your kitchen and household appliances (your clothes dryer could be costing you up to $3.14 p/h).
So while running your heating may not be the big bad power sucker you thought it was, there are some simple things you can do to keep the power bill to a minimum while staying cosy in your home;
Set your thermostat to between 18-20 degrees. One degree higher could add up to 10% onto your power bill.
Heat only the room you are using. A great advantage of split systems is that you can isolate the rooms you want to keep warm. You may love your furniture, but there’s no need to keep them warm so make sure all heaters are switched off except the one in the room you are in and shut doors to keep the warmth in.
Open your curtains and blinds during the day to let the warmth in, and close them once the sun goes down. Up to 20% of the heat loss in our homes is through bare and uncovered windows.
Maintain your air conditioning unit. Regular and thorough maintenance of your unit will help your heater run better and reduce your power bill. Ensure the filter is cleaned regularly and dust the vents and any exterior components.
Switch your ceiling fan to winter mode. By putting your fan in reverse it will help to push the warm air down rather than pooling on the roof.
