Steps to increase the electrical safety of your home this storm season

Huge thunder storms, devastating floods and damaging hailstorms are part of our life as Queenslanders. You can reduce the electrical risk this unpredictable weather has on your home by following these tips;

Before a storm

- Familiarise yourself with your switchboard, gas and water supply and ensure you know how to turn them off and back on again.

- Ensure you have safety switches installed and that they are functioning correctly. Visit our blog for simple steps on how to test your safety switch.

- When a storm is approaching, switch off and unplug electrical equipment not in use.

- Unplug outside electrical equipment i.e T’V’s, speakers etc and store in a safe, dry spot.

During a storm

- If you have lost power, unplug electrical equipment (if you have not already done so) and turn off power points.

- If flood waters are expected, move all electrical equipment to a high point in your house.

- Do not use a fixed telephone during a thunderstorm; it has the potential to deliver an electric shock.

- Stay tuned to local radio stations for weather updates and warnings

After a storm

- Continue to listen to your local radio stations for ongoing weather reports and warnings.

- Stay away from any fallen, low or damaged powerlines and report them to the emergency services or your local electricity distribution entity.

- Do not approach electrical signs, street lights, electrical cables or any other conductive material that may be lying around your house or on the street.

- If you have lost power, your electricity distributor should be able to give you an indication of when the power will be reconnected.

- If you notice damage to your switchboard or any electrical equipment, stay clear. Do not attempt any electrical work yourself. Using water damaged equipment can result in electric shock or fire. Call us to come and take a look as soon as possible.
