Queensland smoke alarm laws
On the 1st January 2017 new smoke alarm laws were implemented in Queensland to give occupants the best chance of surviving a house fire.
Some key changes; 1) Smoke alarms in every bedroom 2) Must be interconnected (1 goes off, all go off) 3) Must be 240v Hardwired (No battery only) 4) Must be photoelectric.
Photoelectric smoke alarms are able to see smoke therefore are able to detect the fire early and with interconnected smoke alarms, you will be alerted of the fire no where you are or where the fire started in the house.
Your property type determines when you must adhere to this new legislation.
1) Current leased properties - 1/1/2022 If you renew an existing lease or start a new lease these changes must be implemented before the new lease is signed
2) Existing Private dwellings - 1/1/2027 If you plan on selling/leasing or extensively renovating there are changes that are required before handover/new lease or completion of renovation – see QFES link before for details.
3) New Private/Leased Dwellings - 1/1/2017 All new homes built after 1/1/2017 must adhere to new legislation before handover.
Queensland Fire and Emergency services recommends updating your smoke alarms to match the new legislation as soon as you can.
