What to do when your power trips
One of the most common call outs we get is due to power tripping. When the safety switch trips and turns off the power to a whole section of the house, it can be incredibly annoying, but there is a reason why this has happened. It might be a faulty appliance or indicate a high load from a variety of appliances on that circuit. It pays to know how to reset your safety switch so you can get on with your day without having to call an electrician to come take a look.
Here’s a simple 3 step guide on what to do next time your power trips;
1. At the switchboard, reset the safety switch that flicked off – if it trips again, the last appliance turned on might be the cause. Disconnect that appliance from the power point and reset the safety switch. If the safety switch stays on the problem is fixed.
2.If the safety switch continues to trip, unplug all appliances on this circuit and plug them back in one at a time until the safety switch trips again - you have found the culprit. Avoid touching any potentially faulty appliances while the power is on.
3.With any appliance that is tripping power, try this appliance on another circuit and if the same problem occurs, you will need to either replace or get it repaired by a qualified person or the manufacturers authorised agent.
If you continue having problems, give us a call to come and take a look. Don’t attempt to do any repairs yourself!
